NY airport P3 attracts interest

Representatives from more than 100 companies attended a recent information session on a potential public-private partnership to expand the Long Island Macarthur Airport in New York, according to a report from Newsday. The Town of Islip, New York issued a request for qualifications April 8 seeking a private partner to develop, design, finance, operate, and maintain the expanded terminal for 40 years.

The project will create an upgraded air terminal to accommodate additional flights and will connect the airport to the Ronkonkoma Long Island Railroad station north of the airport. Two potential locations are under consideration for the terminal -- a northern site closer to the train station, and a site closer to the existing terminal by Veterans Memorial Highway. The private partner will select the location. Officials in Islip are aiming to have construction underway in early 2027.

Governor Kathy Hochul said in February the state will contribute US$150m to connect the MacArthur terminal and the train station. Suffolk County committed an additional US$50m investment into utility and other infrastructure around the station.

Roughly 12 of the companies that attended the session are aiming to be project leads, while others are hoping to advise or participate in some other way, according to the report. In 2024, the airport handled more than 1.3m passengers and it is served by four commercial carriers: Southwest, Frontier, JetBlue, and Breeze. Responses to the RFQ are due August 14.
