Over the past 20 years, China has experienced a colossal rise in demand for electricity, with growth averaging 8.2% annually over that time. A large part of the demand was required to meet the needs of China's burgeoning economy which, in recent times, has grown at staggering rates. This has made China the world's second largest producer of electricity in the world (after the United States), with the power industry accounting for around 5% of its gross domestic product. According to some projections, China's electricity demand will continue to increase at an average annual rate of 4.3%, reaching 3,596GWh by 2025.
